A little question

I know I should be updating but we are just up to our eyebrows in MLS listings and house plans ...

Question - Which is better .. an older home, in the city with no lot or a brand new home over by mom's with 1-3 acres?? HELP .. This house stuff is driving me insane!

Comments:
We've had both and I prefer the new house.
The old house had a huge yard and lots of trees but it was old, there was always a list of things to fix up and the neighbours were great but neighbourhood not so great.
In the new house, it's a breeze to clean. It's easier to keep on top of everything when it's new versus trying to clean 18 years of crud out of the windows and baseboards and recaulk so it looks fresh. It's in a great neighbourhood and there's a lot of young families here. Trees would be nice though and a bigger backyard but we manage with what we've got.
When we retire though we'll definitely move out of the city limits onto property with a few acres, by then the kids will be moved out and we won't need the city.

Well that's a happy craziness!

Whatever you pick, make sure you won't be house poor...no money for projects...either decorating or renovating. Make sure if suits you lifestyle...if you aren't a garden, lawn mowing type...you probably wouldn't appreciate a weekend of lawn maintenance. On the other hand...if you are outside must of the time...go for the big yard and lots of elbow room.

Our Calgary house was a starter home, great bones and location but a small lot but there was enough room for me to putter around. Had the girls been smaller, a jungle gym may have been a problem.

This house has an awesome location, had some maintenance issues but we are addressing them one at a time...been here since '99 and we aren't quite done...we do some work then take a break.

Do yourselves a huge favour and get a good house inspection so you know exactly what you are getting into and it will also give you a good idea on future big ticket reapirs etc.

We are so excited for you & JJ and the girls! Keep us posted with the progress!

Well, of course, that depends on your priorities. Personally, I would go for the newer house with more land. I love to garden, hate the fog and pollution in town, like the extra space for privacy and a newer home is less of a money pit (coming from a current money pit owner) and thus less work.

Home in town is nice if you are all about the convenience and don't like to commute. When we had our nice house out Westfield, my love was blind, so I didn't mind the commute all that much. Some days it sucked, but mostly not bad. But now that I am in town, no WAY I want that commute again!! I don't know how I did it for so long. It is really just a different lifestyle. No just "popping" down to rent a movie, or running into Walmart and back home within the hour. More money on gas to and harder on your car. Now my time is more valuable because I have much more to do. When I had more down time, I liked living out of town. All things to consider.

New house is our say...lol anyways maybe we will planned our trip right on this summer!! hopefully to see your new house and your new baby..take care!
